Over the last 18 months we have been carrying out refurbishment of our property. We both obtained interest free purchase credit cards and used these for the majority of our purchases rather than using our savings. As we spent on the cards, we put the money in our Santander 123 joint account. The monthly charge is covered by paying our utility bills, so the extra money attracted 1.5% interest (approximately £25 per month). When the cards reached the end of their interest free period, we obtained balance transfer cards and transferred the balances. By doing this we will effectively had nearly 4 years free credit and interest on the money we would have spent anyway. Inspired by Martin we realise this won’t work for everyone but it certainly has far usl
