I am 61 and, thank the Lord, quite well both physically and mentally upbeat. However, recently having been presented with a wonderful, beautiful, granddaughter, I've naturally been looking for pictures of our son's childhood to share with our lovely daughter-in-law and son. Trying to find a particular photo, I was overwhelmed by how many photos we have, many of which are random views, flower close ups and fuzzy indistinguishable blobs!

I'm now culling through all these photographs, have ordered picture corners and extra photo book pages to present the remaining pictures in such a way that they can be understood. It's going to be a very long job but so worthwhile!

When it's finished I intend to slowly go through every cupboard and drawer to reduce the amount of work that faces the kids when we're gone. (They live abroad to make matters more difficult for them.)

Do ask them what they want, as there may be stuff they'd actually like which you think is for the junk.

    What a lovely idea.

If there are photos that they want to swap at a later date (hopefully, much later) I'm sure they can sort that between them. It'll probably get them reminiscing as well.

Ah, Margot, we've only one son, one daughter in law (natch) and one granddaughter, so the things will all go to them. I took over the familial Christening set to show them that the little one's initials, birth year and location had been added, but they said they wouldn't know what to do with it so it remains in our keeping for now. I have ridiculous numbers of old sheets, towels, and loads of clothes I no longer wear (favouring instead son's cast off sweatshirts from twenty years ago at present for walking the dog)! Our home is rather large - and full (but not hoarding, I just like ornaments, lamps and pictures on the walls). And why do I have a drawer full of 1980s tights? The unopened ones are going on Faceache for themed nights! Very MSE.

Make sure you annotate the items. I have two huge amily photo albums with an amazing range of photos dating from 1890 to 1918 but I cannot positively identify more than a handful.

Thanks Yorkshireman, I've been annotating the 'packs' in the first instance and will make notes on the individual pictures on the next 'go through'. A few I can't date, but most I can, thankfully. There is one picture that I believe to be of my grandmother, born in 1887, as a young girl. The oldest picture of the lot, it was in my mother's photos.
