I had an old router, same model and that was replaced by the bt engineer because of the poor speeds.
I might have a very old one with a separate fiber box somewhere.
I seem to remember that I can reset the router from a laptop using a web page something like 192.1432.101......
However, I'd rather it worked as it should without all the fussing.
The bt engineer told me to give it 2 weeks to let it settle. It will be 2 weeks on Monday.

I would just pick resetting only the router for a few days, the for the next few day resetting the hg box instead. If it is the router is problrmatic, by resetting it should make it work, and if it is not the router it should still be slow after the reset. Vice versa for the HG box.
Your family does not use torrents by any chance, as to me this sounds like the nat table in the router memory is filling up, or not being released as quick as it should be.
If you are after a router then a second hand draytek 2830n is awsome, but the wifi is a bit outdated as it does not offer AC or 5Gig, just N and you can pick them up on ebay for around £30. I believe that it will work with the HG box. There are newer and better routers, but cost more. Also if you are into OpenVPN then this model may not be the best for you either.
Also part of the issue could be your isp and congestion or bandwidth management.
Have you managed to solve the problems?
If so, how?
