Proof of technical failure type

I am in the process of claiming compensation for a 5 hours delay to a Ryanair flight (within the EU)

My problem is that the airline say I am not entitled to compensation due to the technical failure being an "unexpected aircraft technical faults".

Aren't all technical faults unexpected?

So I asked the airline to provide me with information on the type of fault, but this was declined because the "technical fault with an aircraft is company confidential information."

So if the airline wont tell me the fault type - how can I determine if the issue warrants compensation. Or are we as passengers supposed to take the unproven word of the airline?

If anyone has experience\thoughts on this situation I would be greatful
