    The second digit in the two digit number is irrelevant. Lets say you pick 37. You then subtract the 3 and the 7. If you picked 36 then you subtract the 3 and the 6. Because you are always subtracting the second digit from itself it becomes irrelevant.
    After subtracting the second digit you are left with 10, 20, 30, 40, ...
    You then subtract the first digit and you are left with 9, 18, 27, 36, ...
    [You may notice that these are the numbers in the 9 times table.]
    These numbers always have the same symbols as each other whenever the game is refreshed. But they don't always have the same symbols as they did the last time you played the game so it's not obvious at first that it's always using the same trick.
