Which mobile phone service provider?

I often have to phone back various mobile phones, call costs can vary according to the mobile service provider that I am calling back, is there a method that I can find out who the mobile service provider is (from the number) before phoning so as to determine the most cost effective way of making the call. Hope this makes sense. Regards Dave

When calling from a mobile you are charged according to the network the phone is actually on now, regardless of what it used to be.
See MobileShop.org.
Say no to 0870!
I disagree with your statement about mobile calls being charged subject to the new network the prefix is allocated to.
I have had experiences with Orange when the original number was on Vodafone but now on Orange and when the bill came in it shows the number as Vodafone and hence higher charges apply. I did call Orange and they said that there was a fault with there billing system and refunded the difference.
I would advise all MoneySavers to check there bills carefully!!
