rhiwfield thanks for the excellent suggestion of using the downpipe to keep the pond topped up. Itismehonest - how quickly did your pond populate with frogs etc? We also had newts at the old pond and they liked to hibernate in the engineering bricks which made up the front step.
Alexelisey be interested to hear how you get on with your knitting (hope it's not a 'nit mare'). I have recently taken up crocheting granny squares - found some wool under the bed left over from a project from ages ago.
COOLTRIKERCHICK - I like bulk buying too - got 20 litres of fabric conditioner delivered this week along with 5 litres of hand wash, and toilet cleaner. Lasts ages.
James Douglas
I also go to Booker's and buy trays of euro shopper tinned toms. beans etc..
I am nowhere near my target that I wanted to get by my Birthday which is just over a month away, sooooo if I can get half the amount of the target, that will be good, as we can then get something done on the house...
so if it's ok with you - i might just drop my head in from time to time - but there is no way i will be able to read all of the unreads between visits - so i doubt i'd have a clue what you are all on about (no change there then
see you somewhen
made loads last year
Hi Spodger Seedwrapper, I love that name...
yep we do tend to waffle on:D, but prob as you are aware, we have become a nice little family on this thread, and we do worry if peeps don't post..
made apple and a rhubarb crumbles, but I must admit, my rhubarb this year is a bit pathetic.. short, thin, sparse stalks, does this mean I should split it? I have had it quite a few years now, and have never split it. when would be the ideal time to do this?
put a bid on some courgette plants on the bay..
looking out for some strawberry plants, so if anyone got any runners going spare:D
FK I was thinking you piggie food bill must be through the roof with 30 pigs.. really hope your meat supplier don't change their minds
ITSME... is it right we will be having better weather next week???
Our largest pond started life as a cattle water-hole. We had it landscaped to keep the spring water circulating (specialist job which would be way beyond us) so that all the water moved & didn't go stagnant at the end furthest from where the water enters.
The frogs & toads were always around but the newts came a couple of years after the work was done. They probably didn't fancy scuttling about between various sized cloven hooves so waited for their opportunity.
That probably shows that newts are considerably brighter than frogs & toads.
There's all the usual whirly-gigs, boatmen, water snails & dragonflies, too.
At the moment when the sun shines all the tiny froglets are sitting on the lily pads like something out of Beatrix Potter.
They're also starting to make their way out of the pond so it's a case of having to tip-toe carefully around because there are hundreds of the things &, being tiny, they're really hard to see
I have been looking for more veggie meal ideas especially lentil/grain based ones as they are cheap, healthy and filling. We dramatically cut down the amount of meat we ate a few years ago however it has started to creep up again and it is just too expensive to eat the kind of meat that we want to eat too often.
Part of my problem as well is that I am not very flexible in my thinking for dinner and I need to accept that French Toast, sandwiches etc could be ok for dinner
We put an order in with Approved Foods a few weeks ago and did get some real bargains however it was on food that we could have loved without and the things we regularly use were not any cheaper. Over the next few weeks I should have a bit more free time so I am going to start meal planning properly and try to get into a better routine.
The reason for my saving is very important to me and I am determined to save every single penny I can!
Not here. It gets warmer mid-week but the only days mentioning sun are 19th (partly sunny) & 21st (some sun & possible shower)
I had a look at what it says for over your way & it's very similar, sorry.
At the moment it doesn't look like we can expect more than 2 days of sun together in the next month. Hopefully that may change, though. If not it's going to be a case of every fine day spent trying to catch up with mowing & weeding & none left just to be enjoyed. No point having gardens if we can never just sit & enjoy them, eh?
so not only do the nights start drawing from next week, it looks as though the weather is going to be a bit pants too
Italians are very good at making small amounts of ingredients go a long & tasty way, Rummer. So their recipes are always worth a look.
There are also many web sites now with all sorts of recipe ideas (google lentil/pulse recipes) but, if you belong to a library, it's worth getting a few books out, trying some things &, those you like, copy the recipes for. Very MSE :rotfl:
I have maybe 50 recipe books so if there's anything you think I can help with just shout.
We've just been filming 4 red deer in our top paddock. It's possible they came back to check on their calves. They often give birth in our field & hide the calves in the long grass or gorse.
Retreated into the polytunnel today and finished off potting the toms into their final bags. I use heavy black plastic bag pots for them. They're all in their final positions now.
I've got at least half the sweet peppers into 3 litre pots, but they'll probably end up in something larger. I don't think I've really got the hang of peppers, but they're looking reasonably substantial at last. Are they really 4 months old?
