The desktop is wired to the router. Sadly no paperwork with anything of any use! I guess the isp may give me the password although I don't know. I'm going to university at the weekend so I'll have another wireless network there so I may just give up on it here for now. But at least it sounds as though it's the router and not the laptop causing the problems! So hopefully I'll be able to get the internet where I move to! Thanks for all your help guys.
On the PC which previously logged into the router config, did you use Firefox to log in? If so, there's an easy way to show the password used.
If Firefox wasn't used, download and run SIW http://www.gtopala.com/ on the PC which has successfully logged into the router. Look in the Secrets section and it should reveal the password for 192.168.0.1.

No sadly firefox wasn't used. I've just downloaded SIW as you suggested (very clever!) but in the secrets section it sadly reveals a few old passwords for obsolete email addresses and virus software etc but no password for 192.168.0.1. Just my luck. I guess it sounds like the only way I'll ever be able to access the internet in my mum's house via my laptop is if I buy a new router. And yes, thanks albertross, I think you're right, the isp will surely have to give me a password given my dad's not the one who's paying for it anymore! Thanks very much to both of you.
Yeah dg834v2. I'll try to get the password from the isp then, although I won't be here for the next few weeks so it will have to wait until I come back. Thank you so, so much to both of you. It's so kind of you to give up your time to help clueless people like me! I really do appreciate it.
Just to let you know I've done it all this morning. Once I was able to log into the router I just added the laptop's MAC address as a 'trusted wireless station' and low and behold, I have internet access in my mum's house. I just wanted to say thank you so, so much to chippy_minton and albertross for all your help; I'd never have figured it out otherwise! Have a lovely weekend!

Tell it your isp username and password, apply, then setup encryption to secure it.
These instructions make it look more complicated than it is.
