Wireless internet problems!

Hello all! I've recently bought a new laptop: Asus Z53JR-AP089C Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T5300. It is running Vista. (which perhaps could be one of my problems?!) It has wireless built in, but I can't seem to connect to the internet. The router is Netgear and at a guess, I think it's been here for about 3 years. When I try to connect to a network the laptop can see that the netgear network is there but when I try to connect to the netgear network it says "Wireless association failed because Windows did not receive any response from the wireless router or access point". The signal tends to be good or excellent so it can't be that which is causing the problem. The desktop is able to connect to the internet through netgear no problem at all. My previous laptops before they suffered their untimely deaths were able to connect to netgear with a wireless card. As wireless is built in in this computer it doesn't have an option for inserting a wireless card.
If anyone could give me any advice I'd be very grateful indeed! Thank you!

Which model Netgear is it? Try updating the router firmware - they may have updated it for Vista. Upgrade the firmware from a wired (Ethernet) connection.
When I click http://192.168.0.1 it asks for a username and password... unfortunately I don't know what I'd need to enter here?! It's was my father's router and unfortunately he's not alive for me to ask.
Thanks Chippy_Minton for your help! I really appreciate it.

Unless you have another PC with it saved, then a reset is the only thing you can do.

To see if MAC filtering is enabled, click Wireless Settings, then Setup Access List. If Turn Access Control On is ticked, it means MAC filtering is enabled.
Which version DG834G is? Probably v1 if it's 3 years old. See http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834G.asp
If it's the v1 or v2 , it doesn't look like it supports Vista - http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101649.asp#vista_wirelessrouter (at least wirelessly, should work ok wired).
Could you get the isp pwd from the isp or any paperwork that he may have left?
