First Direct - a student bank?

Seemed a bit odd to me that Martin included First Direct (my bank who I'd heartily recommend to anyone, and do) in the student account charts.

As far as I know, First Direct aren't a student bank and don't market themselves as one - go to HSBC for that - so it seems a bit silly to include them on there. Might aswell have featured Coutts!

A legit question. You'll see in most articles i pick a 'bad choice' to compare the 'best choice with'. First Direct isn't a student account, but you'd be surprised how many students (espe mature students) simply stick with their existing bank when going to uni. The point was to show "make sure you get the benefits of a specific student account."

  • Does seem a bit like comparing small hatchbacks and putting a top of the range merc in there. Not really relevant.

I take your point about the mature students, but the vast majority are surely first time students.

Everyone knows that there are student accounts about with great offers and interest free overdrafts, and to be honest, if you don't, you've either spent the last year in a wheelie bin or aren't really bright enough to go to uni in the first place.

True True - hence why it was a three tiered comparions. Comparing the winner to
    • First Direct - to prove the power of student over non-student account
    • Barclays Student Account - to prove all student accounts aren't equal
