Smoke Detectors

Hey, Not sure if this is in the right place but here goes anyhow............Does anyone know where I could get hold of some free smoke detectors for my mum and dad? They are both OAPs and on benefits. I saw a thread on the main site saying that some local councils and fire stations in England were offering them free. My parents could really use them-they don't have any. I heard something on the radio about a fire safety week. Any suggestions would be great.

I wouldn't worry about 'free' or not, they only cost a few quid and I would have thought your folks lives were worth more than that. You could try the likes of poundstretcher .. I vaguely remember them being something like £2.99

  • Crikey, I didn't realise they were that cheap! Mine cost 14.99 each! That was a while ago though. I'm off to poundstretcher tomorrow. Thanks!
  • B & Q at Holywood had them last week for either £2.50 or £2.99
  • Contact your fire and rescue service.

I am a firefighter and the Service i work for will fit somke detectors for free (not all do this but most do). They will also offer you a free home fire safety risk assessment along with this ..... usually a 20 minute or so walk around the house with you, pointing out anything that may be dangerous.

It is worth it .... we wont bite ... or laugh at your decor! Not until were finished anyway!

All Fire and Rescue Service are now under a legal obligation to carry out Community Fire Safety and most use this method as one of their activities.

Ive just checked and N.I Fire and Rescue do offer a free home fire safety risk assessment and free smoke detectors fitted where necessary.

hi, i'm in the fire service too. You also may be able to get your parents a new electric blanket if theirs is not up to standard, and we also dished out some deep fat fryers.

I'll give my local fire service a call and let you know how I get on.
    Thanks again!

I have false ceilings throughout my apartment. Does anyone know where I can purchase vertically fitting smoke alarms; or will an ordinary one function on its' side?

An ordinary one will work providing it is properly positioned. There will be guidance with the detector but I think it should be not less than 12" (30cm) from the ceiling on the side wall.

If by false ceilings you mean suspended ceiling tiles you could still screw the detector to them, just use self tapping/chipboard type screws.
