  There is nothing in law/legislation that governs this and it depends on the rules of the scheme.

  Although not an answer to your question, I also rejoined after leaving for 4 years and strongly recommend you to contact the Pensions office prior to or immediately after you rejoin to confirm exactly what and when you will receive the pension. When I left I transferred my pension into a private scheme and was not informed when I rejoined that I had to pay it back in. This results in me possibly not being entitled to an immediate pension and although you may not have transferred as I did I heave heard horror stories. For peace of mind give them a call, hope this helps and good luck.
