Peter if it is a VISA Debit card you are covered via the Visa name for chargeback. You may face problems with the bank and especially with call back centers don't take no for an answer.

You will also need confirmation of your booking, and location where the company is based. Your bank should fill in the form for you on the spot. Other forms of Debit card I am not sure about at all sorry.

As far as I am aware, No.
The credit card will get you not just a refund, but also like for like flights. (as you paid for a service, which you are still entitled to have).
A debit card will get you a refund via the cash back system. (as you have not had the service you have paid for)
Is he covered for a refund ?

Nope definitely not as good as roddydogs and personally I have learnt my lesson and will always use a credit card for such things in the future as what your rights are is much clearer and written down.
That said you should have some comeback and chargeback is definitely worthwhile pursuing even if your bank initially turns you down.
If it comes off your account directly is that not a debit card? Would definitely be worthwhile looking into.

In other words, the amount you paid for your flights should go into limbo until it is sorted out.

That is what the BBC site says.
As I have said previously, they have to compensate you with like for like flights. It is their duty. And they have to re-imburse you within a reasonable time.
