Stainless Steel - Fingerprints

Hi all,

Just about to move into a new hourse, and they are taking the dishwasher and fridge freezer, so we need to buy replacements.

Much of the kitchen is Stainless Steel (the kick boards around the bottom of the units, for example, plus the oven and hob). So I thought it would be a good idea to get a stainless FF and dishwasher.

But the missus said "NO" - she said they look horrible after you've touched them, as they really pick up fingerprints. Well, we've just been to currys and she's right - the stainless appliances are all covered in fingerprints.

Trouble is, though, I think white is going to look silly in the new kitchen. And although some manufacturers do a painted silver finish, I'd rather buy Miele where the choice is usually just white or stainless...

Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks,
P.

A good microfibre cloth will let you keep your stainless steel squeaky clean. The likes of Miele, Neff etc recommend e-cloths. You just need water with them, no cleaning agents, and they deal with those fingerprints and other dirt with absolute ease.

Only time I have seen the e-cloth not working is on stainless steel is when the surface isn't totally smooth. But I'd never buy any stainless steel with a rough surface, anyway.

e-cloths are a bit pricey, but may be you can find some on eBay at better prices.

A wipe with a little baby oil is supposed to help keep ss looking good.

Would it be an option to do away with some of the existing ss, like replacing the kickboards for instance? Then it would only be the oven that's left which wouldn't be too bad if the other appliances were a different colour?

Bit of a judgement call I think. Depends what you can live with and what would bug the life out of you. Fingermarks or different colours?

  • I have had stainless steel appliances in my kitchen for over three years and love them. We are moving shortly and will be buying more new stuff in ss. They do not get too messy but do ocasionally need a wipe, the suggestions above all work.

Bear in mind that appliances in stores get handled hundreds of times a day and it is the cleaners job to do the floors. Having worked as a salesman all over, I know it is generally seen as their job to clean the stock displays but they can rarely be a***d
