Going to Portugal tomorrow, currently with Orange on contract, used my free £5 last year. Any tips for cheaper calls. Gonna be charged 70p per min to send and 30p per min to receive.

Get yourself an unlocked moby and go out and buy a local payg sim card. Then the person calling you gotta pay!..............he he he!

SIM cards cost €20 or 25 with €15 credit. They all seem to have similar tariffs for local calls, when you discount the tariffs with a monthly fee. For international calls, TMN and Vodafone charge about 30p/min weekdays, 15p weekends.

Using a callback service, you can make calls to landlines for around 13p per minute, mobiles 20p per minute.

You could leave an answerphone message on your Orange phone with the Portuguese number - don't forget to set up the answerphone PIN (needed for calling from abroad or from another phone) if you haven't already.
