when do i call to downgrade

hi

a few months ago i took up an offer with 02 through phones 4 u,the offer was 6 months cashback and after the first 6 months u could downgrade to a lower package(i only took the offer to get the phone).you have to send in your 1st and 6th monthly bill to get the cashback,what my enquiry is,is when do i call to downgrade my package?is it the day i get the 6th bill through the post? and do i need to give a months notice for it to drop so will i in effect be paying 7 months at the higher tarrif and then 5 at the lower tarrif?
