Today I discovered that Argos only allows 2 online debit card payments to this credit card in any 30 day period. Is this legal ? no such restriction is stated anywhere in the Terms and Conditions but i had an e-mail saying it was in their guidelines ? what are those ?

Well that's an interesting question since 'legal tender' (which I doubt a debit card*, or even a cheque, is) must be accepted in settlement of any debt. Once a debt exists, in other words, lenders are not expected to be sniffy about how it is repaid.
If a debit card were legal tender I doubt what Argos are saying would be allowed. But, apart from that, they are entitled to make up whatever restrictions they wish and put it in the credit agreement. [Are you definitely sure it is not in their terms and conditions?]
The difference between your paying them by (say) BACS from your bank and a debit card payment from the very same account is that Argos must process to collect the latter, wheras they'll alway accept the former as the first thing they know about it, it is in their account.
Why not use direct debit (Argos still collects) as a method of payment instead?
*Just remembered that quite a few credit card issuers aren't even set up to accept debit cards - so obviously it is a 'privilege' (rather than a 'right') to be able to pay in this way.....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam0 -
American Express do the same. I tried to make a payment mid mnth and it said because I have made a payment by debit card in the last 30 days I can't make another!!Kavanne

Skycard are even more stringent with only 1 payment via the website using a debit card.
You then need to either ring the call centre or do a bill payment from your bank account.I beep for Robins - Beep Beep

ok thanks guys for showing me i'm not alone with restricted debit card payment, but what i am concerned about is YES I am definitely 100% sure that this condition does not appear anywhere in the T&C. which i still feel aught to be there. I do pay by Bacs transfer instead i protest strongly at ringing an 0845 number to give them a payment lol. Milarky the reason i dont set up a direct debit is bad experiences in the past with DD

Ouch,
Just logged on to Argos Matercard online site and the option to make a debit card payment has now been removed. The only option available is to set up a direct debit payment service. Yeah I know I can and have done a bacs transfer via my bank but isn't this a bit naugty of Argos? Can any other card holder confirm this ? or is my account glitched ?0 -
Yep debit card payments is not there now just direct debit. How long does it take to do a Bacs transfer for payment..0

refer to the back of the statement it shows ya the account number for argos, thier sort code and you will use your full card number as customer reference number for the transfer. APR is currently 1.94 monthly and nope no indication from them as yet of an increase in APR but i'm due a new statement on 6th i'll let u know.0
