I am interested in taking on a 0% offer if I can get a suitable SBT,
I think the current recommendation would be to apply for an alliance and leicester card. (correct me if I'm wrong).
Background
Basically have some savings, which are offsetting my mortgage, but I am buying my ex partner out of the property which will put a hole in this. I hope to supplement these savings with a decent sized lump of 0% cash for a while as a buffer.
Questions Then
1. Can I just apply online or is it better to go via the phone?
2. Should I subject myself to credit checks before looking for a new mortgage promise?
3. Do the cards offer a substantial credit limit ie >£2000?

Recently the MBNA cards (of which A&L is one) have started introducing balance transfer fees.
I think that includes A&L, but capped at a reasonable £35. As long as it is a large transfer it is still worth it.
Alternatively get the new Egg Money card to use just for SBTs, then any other card which does not charge a fee and route the balance transfer via Egg. See www.stoozing.com/0fees.htm
If you are looking for a remortgage then don't go overboard doing this, but if you are just talking about one or two cards then you should be ok, assuming your current credit rating is good.
Credit limits depend on your income, credit rating and existing debts. I can't say for sure if you will be offered more than that, but all my cards limits are higher.
Applying online is fine.0 -
Ok, thats great
Im obviously a little pensive about "stoozing my cherry" this late in the game.
I'll go fo A+L and post back to let everyone know how it goes, there may be other late bloomers out there...0 -
Eventually got sorted out,
Applied online on the 29th of september, recieved and activated the card yesterday (20th October). Got a limit of £2500 so not too bad.
The SBT fee was £35 as expected.
The operator I spoke to for card activation was quite helpful, I activated the card (not sure if that was necessary as it isn't to be used for purchases) and set up a direct debit for the minimum payment. She advised that I may have to make the first payment 'manually' as the DD might not go through quickly enough.
They did try to push card protection insurance a bit though...0
