that is odd I have regularly paid money in over the counter with just the a/c holders name and account number at both halifax and nationwide without any problems in northantsI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0

You got a counter clerk who was plain wrong/jumped up/arrogant or a combination of all three. Unfortunately you got the wrong one at the wrong time. I would just accept it and go to another branch where someone less officious would be on duty.
I pay in about 1 or 2 small cash transactions per week on Fleabay. There's no fees if I go to the same bank as the account holder and they get their money instantly. I've never had a problem with only having the account number, sort code and the persons name.
I also pay in £200 to £400 into my wifes account each week at a local bank. Only once have I had a problem when the cashier said that I couldn't have a printed receipt as it had the account number on it! Well duh! She returned my wifes bank card which has her sort code and account number on it..........................
Then I pay in either cash or cheques at times for my employer and their 30+ bank accounts without problems. The man without a signature.0 -
I pay money into my children's accounts whilst they are at Uni and have no problems doing so.Middlers0

As long as you have sortcode and account number and name there shouldnt be a problem.I just fill out a pying in slip which are held in branch then take it to the counter.Easy.I would say though always get the reciept incase anything goes wrong.Cos if money does go missing and you havent got the slip the bank wont refund. And this does happen.Sorry to have waffled0
