Want to start a family but have Money Worries!

Hi everyone!

Well... the title says it all really. Me and my partner want to start a family sooner rather than later cos ..well.. he isnt getting any younger :D . My partner does owe around £6,000 which in theory could take anything up2 2 years to clear and we didnt really want to wait that long. So I am looking for other people that are or have been in that situation and what the outcome was really?... Did you wait? Did you cope? and any tips?

Thanks
Stacey x :o

Hiya, when I had my first 2 we were debt free and both working, neither on great earnings but a decent joint income, but now 3rd time round I'm a SAHM and we are not debt free but we will manage just fine. We get alot of the kids clothes and toys at NCT nearly new sales and you can get moses baskets and loads of other often like new equipment from these. I would never put off having children because of money as you never know what may happen and I'd rather things were tight now when they are small and will not remember, you'll always manage somehow.

Remember that although it can happen the first month you try it often doesnt and took us over 2 years to concieve our first daughter but the second and third happened very quickly.

I think finances should be looked at prior to having children, after all you financially have to support an extra person on possibly less money if you work.

Can you afford to keep upto date with the payments whilst you are on maternity leave factoring into account the bits you will need to buy for the baby? If so, then you should be fine. If not, I'd try and throw everything you can at the debts to clear them off early.

Having a baby is a wonderful thing, it can also be stressful due to the sleepless nights etc so you really dont want to add money problems to the mix.

I guess it depends....are you ok with second hand? In which case WOW bargains to be had from freecycle and carboot sales. You can get everything for baby for less that £100.

As for debts....make arrangements.....a kiddie doesnt cost anything really for the first 3 -4 years of its life....so take that time to clear the debts :)

Hi, thanks for that. I did forgot to say that (cutting a long story short) this is my partners debt and not mine so therefore whilst i am taking maternity leave i will have no outgoings apart from the baby, my partner would still be working his 40hr week and paying off his debts to the best he can

What about working out your debt free day and trying 9 months before that. It might take you a while to conceive but equally you might conceive in the first month. I conceived in the 1st month on 3 occassions in my 30's.

There are lots of threads about keeping baby costs down.

    Good luck.

That is encouraging news to hear :j :j

I've just turned 30 and am ttc, but do not hold out much hope for the first month but will be so disappointed if i am not lucky that first month.

To the OP, i keep reading that it is 'never the right time' and you always find the money.

    Good luck
