Hi, I travel quite frequently to Asia and noticed a hi-fi that I would like to purchase in Hong Kong and bring back on my flight. I know the limit for goods is 145GBP, and the hi-fi is priced at 340GBP. I know the duty is due on the overall amount, but can someone please advise how much duty I would have to pay?
FYI, the hi-fi is 599GBP in UK; Rip-off Britain

Hi,
under normal circumstances I could help but i've got 2 weeks leave and thus do not have access to our tariffs, anyway if you want to ring the national advice line, prob not open today, on 0845 0109000 they will be able to help.
Remember you will need to pay the duty on the full amount of the goods and then the vat on this total.
Also its worth considering that very few companies offer international warranties therefore its always worth factoring in some extra costs incase the item goes pete tong and it need repairing.
all the best

Thanks for all the advice. I called the helpline, they asked for a commodity code and gave me another number to find it. Called 01702 366077 for my commodity code, told the lady the proposed goods, she advised the commodity code and also suggested that the duty would be 13.9% and then standard 17.5% VAT. Even paying these charges I would still save 130GBP, I will still bear in mind international warranties.0
