The Perfect House? ... Or Quick This One ... Before We Miss the Boat!!!

This is a question to those of you that are in your FIRST house that you've got a mortgage on.
It is to first housers as this is probably more relevant to their psychology of the buying decision.
Did you really buy your perfect house? Or did you scrap and buy the first thing you could afford and get a mortgage on for fear of missing the boat?
I know the house I bought wasn't anything like I wanted. I did it for fear of missing the boat.
What about you?

I bought what I could afford.
I am soooooooooooo glad I managed to sell it before everything went belly up. Now looking for something I really really love, and can stay in for at least 10 years.0 -
first house - just bought 1 week ago - it's perfect and will stay for at least 10 years. Was in the right place in my life to buy with partner, and so did. Wouldn't have bought if we couldn't find the right house, we knew the market was going down, so not buying a house in which we wouldn't be able to "ride out the storm" so to speak wasn't an option. We woulda just stayed renting our flat.0

We're in the process of buying our first house, it's not perfect, but I find it hard to believe that any house can be. We've been looking for over a year now and have lost out on 2 other houses we really liked.
For us this house is a minimum 10 year house. It has 3 bedrooms, so we'll be having our first kid here. Its in an area we really like and location was the one thing we found out during our search that we couldn't compromise on. I think the only compromises we made on this house are it's mid-terrace rather than end, or semi. And it has a paved garden, but we can turf that over. And I'm sure there will be lots more niggly things we'll find, if it gets that far
Ideally I would love a life time house (i'm not one for moving). But even with big price drops I can't see we'd ever be able to afford a 3 bed detatched (or extendable detatched) in Guildford or Godalming as first time buyers.0 -
I bought what I could afford ( 1-bed flat in regeneration area for 2x annual salary, 6 years ago) and moved because my flatmate at the time pooed in my towel and it was the last straw. I bought the first flat I viewed as the survey came back okay, I could walk to work and get a taxi home from the occasional night out for a fiver, it didn't need any work and it was empty ready for me to move in. I was cheesed off with moving every year, giving my money to landlords, some good, some not so good, and was ready for a bit more responsibility in life and a place to call home after 6 years of renting in 3 different countries.I joined the 21k debt free in 2 years head to head challenge 12 December 06

The first house I bought we called 'the doll's house'. It was a tiny place in the middle of a particularly !!!!!! estate in SE London.
I knew it was time to sell when I called the police to complain that someone had tried (and failed) to asault me.
The copper asked me what I did for a living and suggested I did it somewhere else when I told him!0 -
I bought the cheapest place I could find that I actually liked. It turned out to be a lot better than I expected.Happy chappy0

I loved our first flat. I thought I was living in a hotel after the crumby places we rented. We had no furniture for ages...but I thought it was fab. Our first home.;)A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step
