How do I find out the strength of my TV signal

Our tv reception has always been really poor so to avoid watching through snow storms we have been watching terrestrial tv through Sky.It's about time I fitted a better aeriel on the roof but when looking through the screwfix catalogue it seems each aeriel depends on signal strength and I have no idea what strength mine is.I'm not even sure which transmitter covers my house. We are in N.Lincs and the ITV channel is Yorkshire.

Buy a signal strength meter. Try Maplins.

Your signal is probably from Belmont, but you may suffer problems like my parents. They live about 20 miles south of Emley Moor and this has always been the transmitter they use giving an excellent analogue picture. When going digital the picture was awful. After a few visits from an engineer it was diagnosed as a signal clash between Emley Moor and Belmont as digital signal is not yet at full strength.

The digital picture was improved, but it's still not as good as analogue.

From what you state, you're living in weak signal area.

If you have a freeview adaptor or integrated tv with freeview often in the settings there is a free signal strength meter

A guide below on freeview/terrestrial TV

Have a look at the houses around you and see what type of aerials they have on the roof.
