Hiya,
I am really new to all this ebay stuff and have just listed my first item. I have had a email from someone asking if they can buy my item now at a good price. My question is, can I accept a payment like this and how would it work with the paypal system?
Sorry if this a really stupid question.

you can but it would be off ebay/paypal
its not as safe either (not that ebay is that safe anyway) but you can still receive payment via paypal but as there is no link regarding what the payment is for again, your safty net drops a little more0 -
You shouldn't be cancelling the item to sell off ebay. It's against the User Agreement and will invalidate any safeguards ebay provides.
If you can, you should add a BIN option to the original listing, or if this is not possible, cancel the original listing and relist using both an auction and BIN option. (You can't just relist with a BIN option as it sound like you haven't reached the minimum feedback of 5 to do this yet). There is an additional ebay fee for this due to increased visability.
Note that if you relist, you should advise the person that wishes to buy what the new item number is.
Also note that if someone else bids on the item before the BIN offer is accepted, the BIN option will automatically be removed. (but you could make the start price the same as the BIN price)
Edit:
Or...how about making the start price of your current item the same as the offer the person willing to pay. (obviously you can't do this if someone has already bid on the item) You can always opt to choose to end an item at any time and sell to the highest bidder at that time at the bid amount (i.e the start price).
Note that the increased start price may also cause an increase in ebay fees, but the advantage here is that if someone outbids the potential buyer before you have chance to end the auction, you get the higher price "Now to trolling as a concept. .... If I were you I'd let it run in the auction, more often than not you get the best prices (and it's more exciting!!)
Plus if the buyer really wants the item he will still be bidding for it!0 -

Would it be better to request a cheque or postal order and then wait for it to clear before posting item?

It's totally against eBay and PayPal rules, so my advice is DONT!!To Dare is To Do:beer:0

Don't get into this. Just let the auction run. Your item has interest now which is a good indication it will get some bids. It's not worth the hassle, especially as a new seller.0
