Tax credits/Family allowance and a dependant in Further Education

My 18 year old son is finishing his second year at college soon and is thinking of doing a further 3rd year of further education. He wont be going to university but just a different full time course at the college he is going to presently. Now we are claiming tax credits and family allowance for him at the moment and in October he will be 19. Can anybody tell me, can we claim a further year for both the tax credits and family allowance if he continues to stay on. Also will he be able to claim EMA?

I'm not sure you can once he is 19, but have you checked out the adult learners grant? I'm not sure if he will be able to claim it or not but worth a look?

Oh, just looked and it would have to be his first level two qualification so he is unlikely to be eligible:

ETA: just looked on here and it says up to 20 in some cases for child benefit:

Sorry that isn't much help - I am sure someone on here will know for sure though!

Which course is he going to be doing and what qualifications will he have so far?

You might be able to get another years CB, CTC and him get EMA - depends on the above

You can claim tax credits for children up to the day before their 20th birthday as long as they are in full time NON ADVANCED education (advanced education has seperate funding structures). Check with your son what qualification he will get at the end of the new course then call the tax credit helpline to check, they have a list of courses they can and can't pay towards. Not sure about child benefit so again, give them a ring to check.
