Terrible problems with cancelling Egg Card

Hi All,
My wife and I are having terrible problems in cancelling her Egg card.
Basically we paid off the balance at the beginning of April, and we e-mailed them using their online system that we wanted the account closed. They said they would close it...
A few weeks later they applied £42 interest to the account, we paid that, asked them to close the account, and they said they would...
We assumed that was the end of it, but last night we received an online statement, with a minimum credit charge of -50p!
My wife phoned Egg, who last night said they would overlook the 50p, and close the account.
However today the account is STILL open!!
How can we get Egg to close the account, and stop applying interest to a balance that we paid off over a month ago. I wondering if perhaps they won't close it because I cancelled the direct debit, but that shouldn't matter as the balance was paid off?
Any help would be appreciated as this is getting quite stressful! They just won't close the account!
Thanks
Neil
