Would appreciate your feedback on wooden garden buildings, log cabins/summerhouses..

Hello everyone,

we are blessed with having a substantial garden, and would quite like to have an 'outside room' that we can use as a gym, and also as a workshop, either one side of the room, or a seperate room within the structure.

Size wise, looking at something around 4.5m square, unlikely to go bigger than that.

I've had a look around online, and the choices are huge!
I see some that might be suitable, on a slightly smaller scale, available from around £1800, and others that I assume are better, but I don't know why!

I see some come with plastic glazing, and I think I would be wanting one with glass, but bizarrely this rarely seems to get a mention on a number of websites I have seen.

So I was hoping that as the number of websites and companies is huge, I am hoping that quite a few MSE'ers will have at least researched it, if not bought one, and would really appreciate a heads up on what you discovered, as in the level of finish you went for, whether you managed to get glass, whether the perspex is a disadvantage, what the upkeep is like, and if you built it yourself how it all went?

I look forward to reading your replies!

Many thanks

Dan

I'm quite surprised, I thought an outdoor room would be a top MSE'ers tactic to save a bit of cash.....

Has no one on here bought one?

Surely a much cheaper solution than moving house, and it adds value to your property as well.

If no one has bought one, then fair enough, but I am very surprised!

We bought one off EBAY, we had to dismantle it ourself and hire a lorry to get it home, depending on type you go for they're quite easy to assemble. Definetely get one with Glass as they get really cold in the winter, even though our has been plasterboarded inside and electrics put in so we can use it as an office. A good website to go to as they are really helpfull is http://www.gardenbuildingsdirect.co.uk/ Hope this is of some help

    Mortgage-free Glee!
In my previous house, I bought a very large summerhouse from Walton's. They no longer make the one I bought at the time, but they delivered the summerhouse and installed in the garden.

Really good quality product and service but they aren't necessarily the cheapest on the market.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

DON'T use the above website, they belong to Kybotech. A few minutes searching their name will tell you everything you need to know ;)

Thanks very much for your replies!

Angela, the Waltons website looks pretty good, and they have some cabins of a size that we are looking for.

Would you mind telling me what size cabin you bought, and what the cost of it, and the installation on top was?

Did you get someone else to dig out, and put in a concrete base, or did they do this too?

    PM me if you prefer.

    Many thanks

I've got a FinnForest Valko cabin. It's about 10' square, with glass rather than perspex. My little brother & cousin put it together - they cleared the base area, and then used Type 1 which they flattened with a machine. then there were 'beams' that laid on the ground to form the cabin base. The cabin construction seemed quite simple in that most of the bits locked together like a jigsaw, then they had to nail on the roof boards & felt. The floor inside was tongue & groove.

I think it's lovely - although I want to have it lined & insulated so I can run power out there & make it a warm/cosy comfortable year round room. Not that it needs that doing - that's just personal preference. From what I can remember cabin cost around £1700 and it has created an extra room for me.
