Ebay Items Mixed Up

Hi All,

I've recently started selling on eBay again after a few years not using it. I posted quite a few items out yesterday but it looks as though I've accidentally mixed up two of the items and these have been sent to incorrect addresses.

I had a message from a buyer here in England this morning stating that he had received the incorrect item (an item which was actually supposed to be delivered to a buyer in Italy). I am therefore assuming that the items due to be delivered to this buyer is on its way to Italy (delivery takes up to 3 days).

I was going to reply and ask if he could post the item back to me then I would refund his original payment plus the additional postage back to me but what do I do regarding getting the correct item to him? It may not reach Italy until around Wednesday and then there is still the problem of getting it back (if the buyer is willing to send it).

Any advice on how to respond to this message would be greatly appreciated. :o

Thanks

KJ

I actually did a pretty similar thing to you only the items where to the uk.

Luckily there where just a couple of quid each so I just gave them a full refund and told them to keep it.

It would of cost me more to put that one right then the value of the items so I just put it down to experience.

How much are your items worth?

The item bought by the UK buyer was only sold for £2.50 + postage but i the item which was to go to Italy and I accidentally sent to him was sold for £10 + postage.

I had this happen to me. The seller sent me the wrong item.

She gave me the address of where it was to go to and I posted it on. She refunded my cost through paypal.

My brother just suggested that I give the UK buyer a full refund of the orginal purchase plus postage back to me. Then explain to him that the item he wanted was sent to Italy but I will gladly send it out to him free of charge when I get it back (which I certainly don't mind doing given the value).

Would this be a good response?

    Thanks

    Hmmm...what a mistake a to make a!

I think I would apologise profusely to the UK person, explain the mistake that you sent the item to Italy in error and offer a full refund of the price paid inc p+p to maintain goodwill. As it was sent to Italy, explain that it is unlikely to be seen again and so hopefully they will understand.

Also ask politely if they would return the incorrectly delivered item to you as that was meant for an overseas buyer - offer to reimburse their cost in returning the item to you too.

If they do this quickly, send it onto Italy and explain the initial error to the Italian buyer.

I would think trying to retrieve the item already sent to Italy would be too difficult/expensive/time consuming unless it was something rare or collectable that the UK buyer could not obtain elsewhere, so tell the Italian buyer to keep the first item as a free gift but that the correct item is on its way.

    Edit:
Your brother has a great idea! :rotfl:
(and said in much fewer words - but I'm not sure if you will see the item already sent to Italy again)

Going by the responses it's much more common than us buyers realise. Yip it happened to me not that long ago with a hat that I bought. The seller had two identical ones for sale, except one was black and the other white and she sent the wrong ones out.

I emailed the seller and she was brilliant. To cut a long story short, she refunded my P&P which I had paid and asked if I would mind sending the hat onto the correct address and she paid for the postage for this too via paypal. The seller was a gem, and everyone was happy in the end as we both got the correct hats.

What did I do? Left the seller glowing feedback as she definitely deserved it as she was brilliant from start to finish with the sale.

So it would do no harm in asking both buyers if they minded sending on the wrong items by a trackable method just to cover yourself and refund their costs. You never know it might work as it did with me and will do no harm to your feedback as it's an easy mistake to make.

    Good luck.

    Thank you for the help.

I've emailed the UK buyer  . I asked if he could possibly return the item to me, and I would refund his original payment plus any cost he incurs to post the item back. I also mentioned that I will do all I can to have the item which he purchased returned to me and if possible, I would post this out to him free of charge.

Does anyone have any idea on what to say to the buyer in Italy, considering that he will probably not actually receive the incorrect item until Wed / Thurs?

Thanks again, I really appreciate the great advice.:o
