Ebay refunds

Hi, would like some advice regarding an item that I recently purchased on ebay. It had been measured inaccurately so I emailed the seller who has agreed to refund if I return but only the actual price paid not the postage charges which were £3.00 plus £3.00 for me to return it. I've never returned anything before and want to know whether this is normal procedure even though I don't see why I should be £6.00 out of pocket for something that was not described accurately.

Any advice/comments will be greatly apprecitated.

The seller has to refund the postage costs for sending the item to you, You HAVE to pay the return postage, Did you pay by paypal?

Thanks for your reply. Yes I paid through paypal. Can you recommend what I quote to the seller with regards to this. I have had a look on the ebay help pages but the only advice I can find is regarding opening a dispute. Do I need to go down that route?

Open a dispute. As it is the sellers fault I would expect to be fully reimbursed. A dispute being opened will hopefully mean that things get sorted. It's not as daunting as it sounds.

When you say fully reimbursed does this include postage costs? Do you think I should notify the ebayer of my intentions before opening a dispute?

Even opening a dispute paypal will not refund return postage.

Paypal won't give the return postage because they haven't got it to give back. If the item is faulty or not as described, you shouldn't be out of pocket in any way. Was this a private or business seller? Auction or buy it now?

If a buy it now and a business seller they are entitled to pay both lots of postage. A private seller and/or an auction makes it less straightforward although you could still push it.

The item was not as described and bought by a private seller by auction. She is willing to refund but is refusing to pay postage as she does not see why she should be out of pocket!

Oh dear, if she had described it correctly she wouldn't be out of pocket.
I have gotten all postage costs back from sellers when item has not been as described.

I understand from other posts that dispute will get back monies already spent but not the return postage. Do not tell the seller this! Contact her once more, nicely, and point out that you would have been perfectly happy to recieve the item she descibed. Had you known the true description of the item you would never have bid. Surely she can understand that it is not right that you should be out of pocket because of her mistake/inaccurate description. Hopefully she will see sense. Try slipping in that you will leave feedback only once things have been resolved - she may value a good or neutral feedback higher than the cost of the extra postage.

If this fails it looks like you are going to lose out the return postage cost I'm afraid. In which case I would personally leave rather scathing feedback.

Good luck with getting it sorted.

I've received an email finally agreeing to the original postage fees that I paid stating that she can't see why I'm making such a fuss over a small amount (£3.00). She wants it returned immediately to her work address by recorded delivery (it was not sent recorded delivery originally). I pointed out that it wasn't just £3.00 but also the cost that I would have to pay to return the item plus the recorded delivery fee (which I would have done anyway to get a signature). If you return an item can you still leave feedback then? Do you think I should open a dispute or just wait and see what happens when it's returned?

hmm... if something does arrive and is nothing like the description, i guess the only way to get your money back and not be out of pocker for returning it to the seller is to open an item not received dispute?

if you're posting something for a dispute, send it registered - otherwise the seller can claim they never received the item back and therefore they won't have to give you any money back at all!
