As far as I know, Disney stopped selling Lion King years ago (2004? Not sure), globally, so unless they have really old stock I'd guess they're fakes.

Annoys the heck out of me that Disney have done that though. The only reason I can think of they'd do this is to raise demand so they can rerelease it at full price again. If they hadn't given the US a fancy art book and us a silly little plastic playset, I wouldn't have had to spend time deliberating between importing and only using multi-region, or buying over here, until they'd stopped selling it everywhere.

Curse you, Disney! A hex on you. emot-argh.gif

disney did re-release the lion king in 2003/2004 i saw it on tesco and amazon

all these new members with bad reviews smells fishy i suspect your all the same poster :rotfl:

this thread is the third link on google, if they were all praising it it would be suspicious. the fact all the posters appear to have been ripped off suggests otherwise. If it stops others from being conned in the same way it's no bad thing is it?
  • I have just received two DVDs (the Lion King Special Edition and Aladdin Special Edition) from MonsterDVDs.co.uk that match exactly dobono1's description.

They also have "DTS" and "secure-region somethingorother 9" plastered on the cover, which is holographic (but no sign of a disney or other pattern, just a geometric one).

Thanks, by the way, it didn't click until now what the identical scratches/glue marks were on the inside rim - they are of course where the disc manufacturer's name has been removed! Wonder if I could check the code online just to check...

    Incidentally MonsterDVDs.co.uk is also a Thailand-based company.

Will let you know what transpires...
  • I think I must have been lucky when I bought from them, but looking more carefully at the website and the order confirmations etc it looks like the items are actually sent by third parties, then looking even closer the items are dispatched from amazon marketplace sellers, which probably explains why so many of them are dodgy!

However, looking the comments posted here they do look suspiciously like a few people have signed up to give bad reviews, could easily be competitors !

swachacker mentions the removal of a disc manufacturers name from a disc, this is odd (to say the least) because I have checked lots and lots of my DVDs and none have a disc manufacturers name on them! I thought it was just DVDR (recordable) discs that had that, but recordable discs are obvious.. surely nobody would try and sell dvds that were recorded on DVDR ????

Anyway, it's safer to buy from a well known website and that's what I will do in future. Im happy buying from Amazon, but not amazon marketplace sellers as thats as bad as ebay.
  • From an earlier posting, it looks like these 2 companies are the same entity. The address I have for Monsterdvds is Banglamung, Chonburi 20260, Thailand. I seems that Liondvd is also based in Chonburi.

I was sold 2 fake dvds from Monsterdvds (Lion King and Peter Pan). Currently in dispute through Paypal. I would be interested in knowing the full address for LionDVD and also if anyone has had a refund from either of these companies after complaining.

UPDATE: Yes, I did register just to make sure that no-one else is conned by Monsterdvds. An update is that on the phone Paypal told me to escalate the dispute to a claim as they do not support this kind of trader. I did this but then Paypal just automatically closed the dispute and said that as I had received the items, they could do no more. In my opinion Paypal's position is tantamount to aiding and abetting criminal activity. I did not want to return the disks to Monsterdvds for a refund as it would have meant them going back into circulation and some child maybe spending their pocket money on them. The seller should be ashamed but Paypal even more so. I have proof from the usual high street traders that these are counterfeits and Disney UK customer relations are also aware of Monsterdvs.co.uk as they have had a number of other disappointed people reporting similar problems to them. Please do not take a gamble on this company-you risk losing your money.
  • Please see my posting of 4/8. There is nothing wrong in signing up to give a 'bad' review if it is a fair review and prevents even one more person from losing their money and suffering disappointment.

What can I say...I've been caught out and should of known better. Bought a copy of "Heroes Season 1". Firstly, it's been sent from Chonburi, Thailand (I've got the full address). Next, before opening the shrinkwrap I noticed that it was a region 1 DVD (USA, Canada, etc). This is a website registered with a UK domain name. After removing wrapping the cardboard box is not retail quality and the discs aren't finished as in a UK retail style. Chinese writting appears in several places. Finally, be warned, if you want a original copy of a DVD don't buy it from this website.

Someone wrote that if it the price was to true to believe then it was probably a fake. Due to UK/European pricing policy vs US pricing how is anyone supposed to know what the right price is. When DVD's are first released the can be double the price of what they sell it for 6 months later. Is this an excuse; maybe, but I won't be using this site again and I'll be reporting it to FACT, which? (consumer magazine), and my local police.

This mirrors my own experience exactly, same item as I ordered too, except that I chose not to open the DVD shrinkwrap once I got it, somewhat naively believing that if I contacted the seller to request a refund and offered to return the product unopened, I'd get my money back.

    BIG MISTAKE!!

Instead of immediately complaining via Paypal, I entered into a protracted exchange of emails with liondvd, in which they first offered to send a replacement copy, claiming that the non-UK Region 1 version they had originally sent me was an error (yeah, right!).

I gave them the benefit of the doubt anyway, but of course, a replacement never turned up, so more emails were exchanged, and eventually I wrung out a promise of a refund from them upon return of the DVD (at my own expense, by airmail to Thailand).

Again, I was too trusting. I sent the DVD back, waited a fortnight, no refund ever materialised. I emailed them again, asking where my refund was, and now they have gone completely quiet on me, no replies at all.

I have just tried submitting a dispute with Paypal, but as the transaction is now over 45 days old (due to me trying to resolve this in a fair and amicable way with the seller, who have dragged the matter out this long), Paypal will not even accept my dispute.

So, not only have I lost my money, I don't even have the dodgy DVD they sent me either!

I've now submitted a complaint against Paypal itself, for having such useless dispute procedures, not that I expect anything to come of that.

Having just found this site after googling to see if anyone else had had a problem with liondvd, I'm sat here wishing I'd done such a search BEFORE I bought anything off them, instead of after.

In my view, they are a bunch of crooks. Please do not trust them with your money. This is the first time I've ever been scammed by any online retailer. It isn't a pleasant experience.
  • I noticed that this website is still online and doing business, I went back to look at this because today I clicked on a sponsored link on Google and went to a very professional looking website called MangoTango .co.uk , I was about to checkout and purchase when I noticed that it all felt very very familiar!

I'm not saying that there is any connection between the two, but they both direct sale through Amazon Marketplace, so it's not the actual website that fulfils the order and Amazon market place is just full of dodgy sellers and counterfeit items.

It seems anyone can build a site and sell a range of products, amazon ship the products and pay the website owner 10% of the sale price, this seems quite amazing because I bet some big retailers don't make a clear 10%, and these sites like Lion DVD and Mango Tango don't even need to ship items or it seems answer any emails.

The big question is this: Who is liable, is it the website, Amazon of the seller??
  • This sounds familiar! I purchased three Disney DVDs from monsterdvd that were clearly counterfeit. Raising a Paypal dispute failed to help.

    Alarms bells of fakery:

    Loose cellophane wrapping
Video of low quality (possibly poor encoding)
Lack of second disc within each film: despite being mentioned on the back cover and in a "disc 2" trailer on each disc 1

I concur that monsterdvd are not to be used.

    Sam.
