I have an Origo 7210 wireless/modem/router which is situated about 20 ft from this PC. My problem is that the signal keeps fading in and out quickly. I can have excellent strenght signal one second and zero the next. As I am on xp I got it to repair the connection, also reset the router but it still randomly fades out. Really annoying. There are only 2 interior walls between the router and pc. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my old laptop which used a pcma card, but since buying a new laptop with a celeron M processor, I have a constant 'excellent' connection. The only thing different is I no longer rely on the slot-in pcma card.0

What are the walls made of?
Where is the router situated? Corners are a bad location.
Is that router 11b or 54g ?Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

Dam, it went out as I posted. oh well here goes again.
single skin brick walls,
In an external window about 20ft from me, in the best position for all our comps.
11b unfortunately.
I think its the wireless card as the other comp nearest mine has excellent signal whilst mine is zero.
Do you agree?

I agree, my problem was the wireless card(Linksys), and if your other system has a constantly good connection it would seem to support the thought that the card is the source of the difficulty. If your 'other system' is connectinhg ok, then it can't be the router.0

Some cards work better in different laptops and locations.Wireless is still a bit of a dark art.
You could try putting a higher gain aerial on the router. I know Maplins sell some.Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

I have a similar problem with my WiFi connection when my neighbour put his AV Sender on so he can watch TV on his laptop while in bed in his studio flat
Although I have a good signal strength, his AV Sender renders the quality of the link as useless. I tried upgrading my wireless router, network card, sening/receiving aerials and altering the channels, but his AV sender must be transmitting to the whole neigbourhood. After much discussion, he seems to hardly use it these days and my wireless network works on all but the gloomiest of days.
Can you scan for networks to see if there are other WiFi users around you on a close channel? I can't remember which, but you should leave at least 3 or 4 channel numbers between other networks to avoid signal collisions.
Also, you could try dropping the connection speed if you are only using it for the internet. Depending on your internet connection, try a 1Mbps WiFi connection, as the signal will propogate over greater distances than faster connections.
Good luck,

Thanks for the help,
The signal seems to be stable since I put the aerial in a horizontal postition. There are no other users in the area as we are out in the sticks and the nearest neighbor doen't have a laptop etc, nor an AV sender. I am running all PC's and no lappys yet. Will try the high gain aerial from Misco though.

Might be worth looking for an updated firmware version for your Origo branded router, I think they have since been taken over or changed name to Safecom.
There is a good forum for support on this model at http://adsltech.com/portal/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=90
