my new, shiny,pc has just done the same trick my old one used to do.it froze up!no mouse/no keyboard--no control! so i had to cut the power and it started ok.I had just updated norton -my free 60 day trial-and the update needed to restart to complete.Instead it froze at closing windows. How long should i wait for the close down?? More importantly,i,ve just spent a good wedge on this new pc and it has no virus etc .Could there be an external reason to make 2 pc's behave the same way??ie corrupt phone lines/power supply or something? Advice and ideas welcome please!
I have b/band and my isp is wanadoo

Hmm, it might be that there is a conflict of some sort.
As for waiting to shuut down, if it has not shut down after 5 minutes at least do a manual shut down. Did you have wanadoo broadband on your last pc? If you did and the same thing keep happenning to both pcs it might me there might be a conflict with the driver and/or any wanadoo software installed. Try re-installing the driver or remove norton anti-virus altogether and re-install it. If it still don't work try and see if you can use it without norton. You can get another anti virus.
If it still happens go back to your dealer!0 -
Must confess i didnt wait very long for shutdown but at least as long as other normal ones-it never takes long.I did have wanadoo before, but the only software is what comes with the package and i cant imagine it would conflict with a major program like norton.I think i may have to take it back--the speakers sometimes make a noise for no reason,as well.0

There is a problem with Norton. Even though it is a 'major' program it does connflict sometimes for the silly reason it does not like something. I know that it has happenned to loads of people many times.0
