Confused re new phone installtion / line rental

We're moving to a new house on Thursday  Our landlord has told us that there's no telephone line installed, but if we want one, that's fine, we pay. Problem is that the only installation company I can find are BT, who charge £75. Which wouldn't be so bad if we weren't planning on moving out in June 06 when I finish my degree (and when 10 month rental contract runs out) That makes it £7.50 p/m just for installation.

What do you reckon the chances are of getting the landlord to install the line and pay the fee? Bear in mind that once we've had it done, every tenant after us won't have this extortionate fee. It is a student house so gets a new load of tenants pretty much every year.

Although he's said there's no l/line, could there actually be one somewhere? It's not a new house - it's an old Victorian terrace which has been totally gutted and refurbished from scratch, we're the first new tenants. Is it likely that noone's ever had a phone there?

Also, the BT line rental seems to be £10.50. All of us have contract mobiles with free minutes and so the l/line will be mainly for internet and receiving calls. £10.50 seems a bit unfair - at the moment we are paying around £30 p/m for NTL 2Meg BroadBand, cable TV and telephone. I am wondering whether the best bet is to go for this again, however, one housemate is very reluctant to pay for TV (we will prob get Freeview instead) and the few calls we make are expensive. Although there's no instalation fee :T (we can't transfer our current package cos it's in an ex-housemates name and they won't let the name be changed as it's a credit check account  )

I'm very confused by it all  Can live without phone, but not without internet!!! (and it has to be fast internet as there will be 4 computers connected to it)
Can anyone help?!?!

4 computers? who will be connected to the internet apart from you? ask other's to share the cost with you? best bet is to pay for it and say if anyone wants to use it then pay their share ( they will do as i cant see many do their uni work without the internet)when you leave just cut the wires after all the new tennants will have to pay to get the bt enginners out.
I live in housing assocation when i moved here i noticed that my house is the only one with a brand new outside tv arial. couldnt get tv to work and when i went in attic the wire was cut in 6 different places so obvously the people who lived here before me does not want us to have the benifit of having a good reception at thier expense
    While I breathe.... I hope
