Crowns

I curently live in Derby

I hve always struggled to get a NHS dentist. According to the NHS website there are four dentists in Derby that are taking on patients but I've had family and friends go to them and they are horrid.

Whilst being a student I had a absys, which became so painful I registered with a private dentist near where I live. He's a great dentist, very thourough and patient but I've now hit a snag.

I currently need three crowns doing, at a total cost of around £175 per crown. I cannot afford this, just simply cant afford it.

But one of them has now become extremely painful and theres nothing he can do except fit the crown.

Obviously I can get one done and save for the rest but I need them all doing as my teeth are in a right state and its affecting my eating and stuff. I've just ignored it for a while but cant anymore. I'm moving house on 10th and the cost of it is horrendous so I have NO cash to spare.

Need advice on the best dental plan for my situation. Dental plans WITHOUT qualifying periods. Advise on what to do.

PLEASE HELP

-painful mouth- <--- when i eat

I'm not an expert on the various insurance policies, but there is a thread further down this age in which the Tesco dental insurance seems to look pretty good, but it does seem to have a 90 day qualifying period before you can claim.

I would also suggest that this private fee is very good value.

Bear in mind that a single crown on the NHS would cost you 198 quid!! (But also, all three crowns would cost 198 for the lot! That's if you could find an NHS dentist willing to do 3 crowns in a single treatment plan, which is highly unlikely, as it would cost him more in lab fees than he would get for doing the treatment.)
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • Hi

I have recently been for a check up with my NHS dentist (new dentist taken over) and was advised that I would need my existing gold crown on a back molar replaced because there is a slight gap where it meets my tooth, which could lead to infection and losing the tooth completely. I was informed this would cost approx £390 and it would be gold but covered with porcelain.

I have also had problems with a 3 year old bridge (at the front) falling out twice in the last 6 months, my new dentist has informed me that they could send the bridge to the lab for sandblasting but I will probably need to pay for a new bridge at an extra cost.

What total price should I be paying for the crown & bridge?

If your an NHS patient and you need both those things doing, then it should be done under 1 course of treatment, and this will fall into the band 3 charge of 198ish quid.

Anything else, and you're being charged privately.

The dentist will be making a huge financial loss by dong this treatment in one go though, so I'm sure he'll try and either talk you nto having it done privately, or over several courses of treatment. Neither of which you have to agree to.

If he signed the contract, and agreed to treat NHS patients, then he has to abide by the terms of that contract. That says that all necessary treatment is available to an NHS paient on the NHS, and that treatments should not be split up in order to maximise UDAs earnt.

Have a word with your local PCT if anything different is told to you.
