Definately go for a new printer with USB connection.(They are so cheap now) and put your old one on Freecycle as someone may be able to make use of it.

USB? Not necessarily. I've got an old LaserJet 5N fitted with a JetDirect card, thus I have my printer networked. I wouldn't exchange my good old network printer for any brand new USB one!
So, to the OP, depending on what your printer is, you might be able to network it like me, which (IMO anyway) is the best configuration you can get.
