Is the flue for the boiler anywhere near your gas meter...this could be where your smell is coming from. I do think you should get the meter checked if there is a smell of gas, however slight.

Thanks. Had the gas meter checked. Found a leak however it before the pipe passed through the meter so it doesn't explain the expensive bill.

Any ideas as to how much a service for a gas boiler costs?

Would it be better to join British Gas cover for 12pounds a month?

Does the £12 p/m include the initial service?
Have a ring round some corgi engineers and ask for an estimate..if you tell them the make/model of the boiler, they make be able to give you a rough idea.

I pay homeserve £14.99 a month for boiler breakdown cover and this includes a yearly service. I also use them for sewage protection and gas pipe to my house cover. Think sewage is about £5 a month and gas pipe protection is £17.99 a year.
