Need some help from students plz. How much savings to take?

Im going to University of Plymouth to study Civil Engineering this year and need some advice from students about how much savings to take down there. Do most students take savings with them? if so how much is the average?
I plan to take around £2000, im not sure if that wouold be a good amount to take. Im gonna live about 3 hours from home so im gonna spend a bit on train journeys too.

Thanks for your help, I've been worrying about not having much savings at the moment and the money just going whenever i manage to save any. :(

The more you take the less you have to worry about ;)
  • £2000 seems like a good amount to aim for but the more you have the easier it will be for you. What you should do is sit down and work out a budget by looking at what you will be spending and your income and see what your shortfall is and if you want to rely on your overdraft or not. Also look at getting a railcard if you don't have one. Good luck at uni. Don't worry too much, everything tends to sort itself out.

Working out how much youll need each week is a good idea. Then you can work out how much to take. Im assuming youll get the loan, and maybe a grant which will also help.

If you have any questions about Plymouth and the uni feel free to ask! Ive lived in Plymouth for 21 years and Ive been at the uni for 4 years :)

3 hours away? Have you checked that it won't be longer due to traffic?

I study in Plymouth and travel about 60 miles, it sometimes takes an hour 20 but it has taken up to 2.5 hours due to diversions/traffic etc.

I think £2000 is good. I'd say you will need an extra £1000 per year to have a good time (on top of student loan and grant) - if you can get a part time job down at Uni you will be absolutely sorted.
