Train Tickets to France

Can anyone suggest a site for train travel to France. We are near International Station so can get to Paris really easily but Eurostar staff have not been very knowledgable or helpful with then travelling onwards........

Thanks

Unless you enjoy spending money I would not recommend the Rail Europe site!

Use Google to find the voyages-sncf site. Once there, look for a button that gives data in English. You will see the train fares that French people pay (generally cheaper in Euro than in Sterling). For most journeys, buying separate tickets for the Eurostar and for your onward journey in France will work out cheaper than a single ticket. And look out for the bargain fares such as Prems, some of which offer unbelievably good value.

Where do you want to go to?
None of the sites nor staff seem to have all the info. on French trains.
We have friends and family who come to Poitiers from UK, but all agents insist they change trains in Paris which involves crossing Paris.
However, we know that you can change at Lille, just cross the platform!
But because the train from Lille to Bordeaux, stopping at Poitiers, is the Disney train it is not listed on the normal train lists!
So check and double check to avoid akward train changes.
Agree the raileurope site is good, you can phone them as well, very helpfull , sorry can't find the number.

We want to go to Argenton-sur-cruese which I know is possible because the French get the train to Paris from there.......
  • First of all, remember you cannot book Eurostar more than 120 days in advance. There is some facility on their website which allows you to find the cheapest days and times to get to Paris. Sometimes there are off-peak 2 for 1 deals about for Eurostar too.

    Try :

    1) find the cheapest Eurostar trains then
    2) search for a through ticket sold by SNCF or
    3) a separated ticket sold by Eurostar and SNCF
    4) compare Rail Europe's prices

I did a check check of SNCF's prices and the cheapest adult return from Paris came to €45.40 and cheapest family return (2 adults 2 kids) came to €130 return. The quickest trains to Argenton take around 2 1/4 hours and leave from Paris Austerlitz - this requires an express metro trip across Paris with a change of train, should take around 30 minutes so perhaps 90 minutes between one train and the other.

Eurostar do good deals to major cities in france from London (sometimes with just a change at Lille) If you are heading to Spain or Italy consider a return ticket to Perpignan or Nice at around £115 return then book a ticket with Italian railways or Spanish railways (stupidly cheap on local trains).
