Tunisia and currency worry

Just went to buy some Dinar from the post offce to take away next week and she said i can buy it but i will not be able to bring any left over money back  is this right. Bit worried about whati should do.
I am staying full board in a hotel, transfers paid for already.
Taking my credit card with me, planned on taking cash.
Can any one suggest what i should do? buy now? buy at the airport? I am staying in Tunis..i know cards are accepted but i am thinking getting a drink or a snack seems very small for using a card to pay. I don't want to buy to much now if i can't even bring it home!!

I am very surprised you could actually buy it here as it is a closed currency.

www.gocurrency.com (select Tunisia from drop down menu at top of page)

I must admit when we go to Tunisia we take cash and exchange it in small amounts so your not left with loads at end of holiday.

I had to buy Dinar from the hotel when we were out there.

I was frisked on the way back in the airport and the customs man kindly took all my remaining currency off me as a tip.

Luckily it was only a few coins.

You are not allowed to bring it back out of the country.

Is there any other currencies that follow that logic?

  • No, you can't buy Tunisian Dinar here to take with you and similarly can't bring any currency out of there.

We just exchanged about £5 worth at the airport and then we used to use the hotel to change as and when we needed. We were also all inclusive so found we didn't really need much apart from lunch some days and travel/souveniers

Use an ATM when you get there? That's what I did.

Quite a lot of countries do that - for example India.

Whether they enforce it is another question
