Pc crashed, now fixed but no internet

Hi morning all.
Can anyone help I have standard pc with xp on it, it crashed last night because it wouldn't boot up. I managed to get it started in safe mode and all seems well.
When I went to go online, it wouldn't, I then noticed that on the bottom right of the screen there is no little telly screens saying that there is a local network connenction does anyone know if I could reinstate this and how
Thanks

Safe mode is windows without a lot of drivers like modems, network cards graphics cards so as far as the pc is concerend there is no network card therfore not internet connection.

it crashed becasue it wouldnt boot up? whatever. a crash is when somthing stops working mid flight. a car hits another car it stops a plane stops working in the air it crashes. a pc not booting is a pc not booting it hasnt crashed.

when in windows in safe mode run a scandisk and let it fix any errors that may fix your not booting problem.
  • Thanks for that
It all works fine now, it does boot up but all that is missing is the local area connection.
Unfortunatly I am not that computer savvy so I don't really know how to get it back any advice would be grately appreciated.

First check to see if the network connection is there.
Open control panel and double click network connections
What do you have in there?
    this is mine
    networkconnectionssm6.jpg

I have a few connections wireless and wired, my wired isnt in use and has the cross on it. Does yours have the cross? (if its there)

If the wired connection is there but not connected (with the cross) check that the router is on and the cable is plugged in at both ends.

If its there and connected then click start, click run, type cmd, ok.
    in the black box type
    ipconfig/all

it will read somthing like this
    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
    Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : National Semiconductor DP
    PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 2:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Wireless Notebook Addaptor
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

What does yours say in the lines
    DHCP enabled yes or no?
IP Address whats the string of numbers?
    Default Gatway

Let me know and I will see where the fault is.

If you dont have the network connections listed as in the picture then check device manager to see if the drivers are installed.
In to control panel, in to system, select the hardware tab then click the device manager button.

do you have a network adaptors listed? expand it by clicking the + box and see whats listed in there.

if not do you have a yellow triangle next to anything listed normally under unknown devices?
If you do what are they called?

let me know and I will help further.

I am going to the football tonight but I will check back before I leave this afternoon.

  • Hi again
I now don't have any network connections listed like in your picture, unfortunatly I am at work at the moment so I cant really check.
I suppose I really just need to know how to reinstall a connection.
I don't know if this makes any difference or not, but I am on Sky Broadband with a netgear router.

Ok so no network connections listed.

If you dont have the network connections listed as in the picture then check device manager to see if the drivers are installed for the network adaptors.

In to control panel, in to system, select the hardware tab then click the device manager button.

Do you have a network adaptors listed? expand it by clicking the + box and see whats listed in there.

If not do you have a yellow triangle next to anything listed normally under unknown devices?
If you do what are they called? I expect 1 maybe network adaptor or similar. If it is there you need to get the network adaptor driver for your adaptor. if its a branded pc let me know the make and model I ill find the driver for you if it isnt then you will need to have a look inside the pc and find the motherboard make and model if the adpator is built in to the motherboard or if its an expeansion card have a look at the card for the make and model.

let me know and I will help further.

imo, the easiest way to sort out this problem is to restore your pc/laptop to a stable restore point.

ie :- the day before the crash

    Start/Programs/Accessories/System tools/System restore.
