australia xmas 08 flights - should i buy or wait?

Hello.

Been searching around the internet for flights to Sydney from London (or Birmingham) for December 08 (Departing 20th December and coming back 10th January 09).

Travel Supermarket has tickets for around £1300 for Singapore Airlines through Opodo.co.uk.

None of the airline's official sites have flights up for these dates yet, neither does any other site (not Opodo) when i search it directly through there. So i am just wondering should we order these tickets or wait a week or so and see if there's any other (and maybe cheaper options)?

Thanks.

Lucky you! I would love to be going to Sydney for Christmas, hopefully I will be going back in February next year.

The flights for December if not already on sale should be appearing on airline sites anyday now. Fares go on sale around 10 or 11 months in advance.

Christmas is a peak time to go to Australia so fares will be more expensive. BA have flights on your dates from £1,378 per person. Qantas fares are on sale as are Cathay Pacific and Malaysian.

Emirates have outbound fares onsale and the inbound fares are on sale on to 1 January, for your return date the fares should be available very soon.

  • Do you HAVE to go for Christmas? You could almost halve the fair by going sooner/later.
For example we are just back from NZ. Went Singapore Air, 20 Nov07 back 20 Jan 08, booked dirict with SA cost £1477 for two of us! We booked about 5 months before going, prices were the same as a couple of months earlier.
If we had flown earlier or later the cost increased dramatically.
Happy money saving and have fun.
  • Hey, thanks for the replies. We don't have to go at Christmas, but because of mine and my girlfriend's conflicting holidays from uni (she's a student nurse and has much shorter holidays than me) - Xmas is one of the few times that we have substantial time off together. We were thinking of going Summer time, but decided we'd rather spend a little more on flights to go at Christmas and so have longer to save for spending money!

Will keep looking around over the next week at so, looks like 1200 odd is the price it'll be - being there over Xmas time will definitely be worth the extra money spent :D

I would maybe wait a few weeks until the airlines start to properly release their flights, I never have much faith in the accuracy of search engines like Travel supermarkets as the same companies products seem to keep getting found.

Alternatively talk to someone like Trailfinders, they are very knowledgable and will normally find you the best deal.
  • Try STA travel, we have just booked Dec 3rd returning 6th January for £1740 for two. 10th January return was more expensive though, as was flih=ghts later than 5th Dec. Good luck!

Emirates website is showing returns availble on 2nd Jan so 10th might be availble from 4/5th Feb.

    Emirates fly from BHX.

  • Cheers for the replies everyone.

We thought over it a lot more this past few days and £1400-odd on flights and god knows how much on spending money and accommodation would probably end up a bit too much for us, thinking realistically. So we booked an all inclusive 2 week trip to the Dominican Republic instead with the money we had already saved up. :D

Thinking of going Australia next year sometime when it's cheaper, and for only 2 weeks.

    Thanks anyway for the help.
