Uni for one year - then dropped out!!!

Wondering if anyone can enlighten me a little on my situation or rather that of my son.

He went to uni for one year, was really depressed, hardly attended any lectures and was home nearly every weekend throughout. After the summer when he was not making any attempts to sort out finance for second year I asked him if he really did want to go back as it was a lot of money for doing nothing constructive.

So he informed uni, not going back and has luckily been happily working since September of last year.

Now he has a letter from the student loan people saying he owes £6,000 and they intend to collect it through the tax system of his employers.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of percentage he will have to pay back. He takes home about £730 per month.

Grateful for any help in this.

I presume it's like anyone else who gets a student loan - he will have to pay it back only when his wages are above the threshold (check https://www.studentfinance.co.uk as I'm not sure of the threashold at the moment).

If they are taking it through his income then he won't pay anything if his gross income is less than approx £15000 a year, which it is, going on the figure you have given.

He will pay 9% (I think) on anything he earns over that sum in the future.

Thank you both for that, was just wondering if that only applied if you actually completed the three year course, whereas he did one year only???

As far as I know, this isn't the case. However he needs to apply to defer the loan because of his low income as this doesn't happen automatically. He needs to contact them urgently; do you think he may have ignored any earlier correspondence?

Very possibly! It was only that I discovered a letter telling him unless he supplied his NI
number he could end up paying a £50 fine. I had to nag him about that, but unless I had it would have stayed undealt with. I agree, He should ring them. More nagging!! Many thanks for your help.
