New to golf - what brand of clubs

I am looking for a new set of golf clubs and am happy to build my own set rather than buying a bag full of already selected clubs.

I used to play many moons ago when I was a young teenager but now in my 30’s, would like to pick it up again.

I’m not too fussed about what brands, mainly because I don’t know which are best. But I’ve been told if I can to have Ping, Taylormade & Callaway.

I am happy with second hand to keep the cost down and would like to have a range of irons from 4-9, a pitching and sand wedge.

Can anyone recommend a good set of irons which is good for beginners & one that is forgiving as I seem to be good at slicing shots!

Budget of £250

Thanks

I'm a huge Mizuno fan, but think that the decent forgiving sets may be above your price point. Check out any in the JPX hot metal series and see what you think.

My friend has just started playing with a set of Cleveland zipcore xl irons and loves them - he's a 25 handicap, been playing for about 18 months.

Definitely beyond your price range unfortunately, but Mr. M has just bought a set of fitted clubs from PXG, says they’re the best clubs he’s ever had (he’s changed them a few times 🙄)

The 3 brands you mentioned are all excellent. One thing to know about golf clubs is that, in the age of Computer Aided Design, top brand clubs have been engineered to the maximum allowed by the rules, and the marketing around hitting further or straighter is largely hype to try to get keen golfers to replace their clubs regularly.

10 and even 15 year old designs are pretty much all as good as newer ones, particularly in the beginner/improver bracket.

The one thing you need to know is whether standard clubs are right for you. If you are going to buy clubs then get some that are right for you from the outset rather than spend twice by replacing them later. I shan’t try to explain it here but you can either go to a pro (who will naturally try to sell you a new set) or you can do it yourself using a Ping fitting chart … just Google that. Using a couple of physical measurements it will tell you whether you need slighter longer or slightly shorter clubs and will tell you what ‘lie’ you need … taller people need something slightly different to shorter people.

I’m not going to say by this set or that set, but I do recommend you buy a second hand set that matches your fitting, it is too soon to be buying new. You can easily find good sets online especially on eBay.

I got mine on eBay …Ping G15, half an inch longer, white dot ‘lie’ (slightly upright of standard as I’m 6’4”). They are a very forgiving game improver club released in 2009. Anything released since is not materially better. The even older G10, G5 and even Ping Zing 2, are all excellent clubs based on a similar peripheral weighting design and will be slightly cheaper. Callaway, Taylormade, Titleist and Mizuno will all have comparable models from that era, any of which will help keep the cost down for your first set. The key thing is to get a set in good condition.

Good luck. I hope that helps.
