hi All

I would love to go to Turkey for 9 days from UK however beginning of January i had deep vein thrombosis discovered in my led and started blood thinning pills. I am 47 and feel normal but to improve my treatment i decided not to drink any alcohol for the whole treatment which should last about 12 month - does it matter for the insurance?. I am aware and very cautios how to get holiday insurance? Can anybody please advise me where to start? I guess i should aim for 1 trip only rather than 12 month to keep it cheep. Is there any small print to avoid or gotchas?

You are going to need to declare it and see what policy will offer cover and for how much. Try some of the insures that cover pre existing conditions eg staysure

Ask your doctor whether you can safely travel, if they say no then any insurance will be invalidated.

Apply for the insurance, declare the condition and see if anyone will cover you during your ongoing treatment and if they do what exclusions apply.

There on no gotchas, read the small print.

As someone who doesn't drink alcohol I would love to know if there is a travel insurer that offers a discount for abstemiousness.

Or indeed any service provider of any kind at all.

You'll certainly need the all clear and fit to travel from your doctor before applying. In writing if you can.

It's over 4hrs flight so the only way to go about it because each circumstance is different, is to phone and ask. You could try a few online comparison sites to get some idea but it's not reliable in this case.

All clear is always advertising for medical conditions but not cheap. And is it Esure that is currently advertising on telly that they cover for pre existing conditions?

Very good point but i rung my surgery and they informed me that GP's do not issue fit to fly notes. Is there any workaround that could cover me?

Not quite, your GP may not issue 'fit to fly' letters, others might (but will often charge for the service).

It's available privately from any number of sources including travel clinics - will need a medical assessment/exam and will obviously cost.

Even if they're not putting it in writing, has your GP actually told you that you're safe to fly?
