My car warranty runs out in April and the MOT will become due. I'm wondering if I have the car MOT'd now a month early and they find a failure then this would still be inside the warranty period. An I missing something

Is this the vehicle's first MOT?

If so, unless there are faults you already know about then any failure is likely to be on wear and tear items such as tyres and brakes which are not covered by a warranty.

You can have the first MOT anytime after one month minus a day from the date of first registration, and it will expire next year on the registration date.

(Then you MOT after the "Earliest date that you can get an MOT" on the MOT paper copy- again a month minus a day from expiry)

It is A Good Idea to get the MOT done as early as possible, then if it fails on something trivial like a wiper blade or a cut on the inside of a tyre you can fix it and there is no panic over having an expired MOT. (The old MOT is still valid until it's expiry date)

I'd definitely get it done while you still have warranty, it might fail on an item that is covered.

As far as I am aware, you can take your car for an MOT at any time. So there is no reason to not get an MOT early, which is often done by dealers so they can sell a car with 12 months MOT.

All depends on what the warranty covers. (read the T/C) as most MOT failures will be consumable or wear & tear items, not covered.

Is this a new car with a manufacture warranty, or a older car with a 3rd party warranty?

Years ago we used to send out letters offering a Pre-MOT check - anyting identified at that oint covered by warranty then we rectified - It did come up on audit that we had a high number of warranty claims just prior to expiry but there was nothing the manufacturer could do about it. The letters made no mention of warranty claims.

    This

It is unlikely the warranty will cover wear and tear items, of which the MoT check is mainly comprised of. If it were a service plan or a maintained lease, it would probably cover MoT wear and tear items.

I didn't expect warranty on wear and tear items but they'll have to fix any warantee items with an early MOT that they wouldn't have to fix it I do the MOT AFTER the warranty runs out. Even though the car is brand new. I think I've found a life hack. Booking it in next week, with the main dealer. 😁👍

If's this is car's 1st MOT, then a failure (unless it's some thing a user failed to check such as lights or wiper blades) sould be very rare.

21 plate car 3 MOT's no advisories or failures. But taking the car & giving it plenty of good hard breaking, made rear brakes a lot better, giving hardly any use on EV. 😍

If its brand new, why does it need an MoT?

Surely the warranty covers what the warranty covers, before or after the MoT. Whether the MoT finds (an) issue(s), and whether the warranty covers it, is down to what the issue is. I imagine there are areas which aren't normal wear and tear, which it might fail on, but which might not be covered by the warranty, given that they are designed to not cover the car that well, with loads of exclusions and limits etc.

    Maybe I'm not explaining properly.

My car was brand new. It came with a 3 year warranty. That warranty expires in April. Therefore it will also need it's first MOT. If it fails that MOT on say on shocks or springs, I'll have to pay for those. If I MOT before the warranty runs out, they will have to cover those. Hope that makes sense. Now I'm going to book the MOT
