Renewed our travel insurance end of September as due October. 6 week holiday was booked and full balance paid before then. Now 2 months in i may have a new condition but awaiting a scan, possibly kidney stones. We go away in 3 weeks. What are my options and if they now wont cover me will i get full holiday cancellation costs of £10,000/ Drs have tried to speed up the scan so i have an answer this month then i can tell the insurers the new condition but if we cant go will we get the holiday cost reimbursed. The insurance alone has cost us £900

As soon as you can tell them the situation.1

You need to tell them asap about it. They need to know about the condition now, and then you can decide what to do from there. You know about the condition right now, so tell them now.
If they don't cover it, there are specialist insurers that may cover you.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Quick Grabbit, Freebies, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning and the UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.

I take a slightly different line to others. As there is a chance that the scan, and results, will be available before you travel I would hold off from speaking to the insurer. They are very likely to refuse/withdraw cover if informed that test results are outstanding. On that basis you have nothing to lose by waiting. However, if you won't have scan and results by the time you travel, which seems likely unless you pay for a private scan, you will have to inform the insurer. In that situation it will depend on the terms of the insurance as to whether you will be reimbursed by the insurer. Likelihood is that you will not be reimbursed, as you would still be able to travel albeit without insurance. Perverse, but likely.1

Talk to them as early as possible. Slightly different situation, but prior to our last holiday I was waiting for test results. I found a policy which would cover me for everything as normal except for anything arising out of the new condition. And as that was very unlikely to cause me issues on holiday which would need immediate medical treatment etc. then I was happy to accpet that. Price was also good!1

You have to tell them, though I understand the advantage of waiting for results, if they are going to happen before the holiday.
I thought that the ombudsman had ruled in these sort of cases at the insurer should either cover you, as you took out the insurance before you had the condition, or they decide they don’t want the risk of having to pay for treatment while you are abroad and decline cover but do refund the cost. Or some will agree to cover excluding the condition. I thought once you took out the policy they can’t just change their mind and walk away.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
