Gents I've got a lot of respect for both of you and your contributions to the forum but perhaps you could stop arguing about cars on a "standing charges" thread on the Energy forum?
If you want to discuss the merits of motorised vehicles, the Motoring forum - or one of the two rival EV threads on G&E - might be a better place to do it?
(This would have been a DM but the forum software doesn't allow a three-way chat.)
    I think we had stopped.

You're quite correct of course, but the subject of ev's, their charging and taxation were introduced by somebody other than me.

I don't think I can sit and let false claims go unchallenged even though they are off topic. It happens from time to time.

I am not sure that the energy forum is the correct place to discuss domestic appliances such as fridges and kettles or even dehumidifiers, but it happens.

Petrol is a form of Energy just like Gas and Electricity, and VED is effectively a standing charge for cars ! 😈
And now back to the eternal debate on squaring the circle...

Second hand with 30k miles on the clock an immaculate M3 AWD will cost in the very low twenties and a MY AWD will cost around £25k, so comparable to a similarity sized and speced ICE car.

The batteries will not need replacing, they will outlive the car. Cars that are 10+ years old, have done quarter of a million miles and been mostly supercharged are still only sitting at around 10% range lost. There are early Leafs that have done similar on much smaller batteries with very limited cell balancing and no thermal management in the battery at all that are still sat at 85-90% of initial capacity, battery degredation is not an issue.

I'm more interested to know about the impacts and costs of disposing of the batteries at end of life. Not on this thread though!

I wasn't referring to the process from a customer perspective - Te5la are on my list of "absolutely never" brands - more about the issues around the physical recycling of the batteries. As said though, this isn't the place for that conversation.

The infrastructure certainly does support differentiation in what the electricity is used for.  It's not widely known, but The Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021 require EV home chargers in GB  to snitch on how many kWh you've used, and when.  Obviously this is intended as a way to replace all the duty charged on petrol and diesel.

That doesn't work for "granny leads" that plug into a 13A socket.  They don't connect to any network.

I could very easily disable the networking on my charger.  I made sure I got one that doesn't have a mobile phone SIM.  Instead, it uses WiFi and Bluetooth.  So all I need to do is disable the WiFi (e.g. by putting in the wrong password) and nobody will know what my charger is doing.  I will still be able to connect to it by Bluetooth from the phone if I ever need to.

    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
