Fence height.

The property on one side of us has put an extra panel on the existing fence - on our side it is now over 8 feet high.
They say the fence is 6 feet high on their side - does anyone know if we are right to complain please?

Sorry, but how can it be 6ft one side, 8ft the other? It’ll all be constructed out of the same material. Do you mean your ground is 2ft lower than his so the top of the fence is 8ft high?

Our house is like this.  The neighbours haven't complained about our six foot fence panel which must be eight foot their side, although it was already there when they moved in.  If I only put a four foot fence panel in, I would be looking right down into their kitchen and onto their patio and they would have no privacy.

If it is due to ground level then I don't see an issue.  Unless your garden is absolutely tiny it can't make any difference surely.

The correct height is 2m from soil level in the fence owner's garden.

There's no single "correct height" for a fence.

If the fence is put up using permitted development rights, and isn't adjacent to a highway, then the maximum height is 2m measured from the 'natural ground level', unless the fence is replacing one which was already higher.

The natural ground level is open to interpretation, but if there is a level difference then in general planning authorities will take the measurement from the ground on the higher side of the fence.  Ownership of the fence has no influence on where the height is measured from.
