Tax credits were either paid weekly or 4 weekly, if 4 weekly they are/were paid in arrears. When i was claiming child Tax credits i was paid weekly.

First payment for tax credits may have been a lump sum depending on how long it took at the time to award you.

UC is paid 1 month in arrears with first payment being 1 month and 6 days after you submit your claim. You are then paid on the same date each month, unless your payment date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday and then you're paid on the last working day.

In simple terms - Tax credit took your yearly income and predicted your payment.  At the end of the tax year it would recalculate the amount and then see it you were under/overpaid,

UC takes pays you an amount each month, but takes into account any wages you’re earned in that period and deducts is from your payment at a set rate of 0.55 per pound.

Unless you’re entitled to the work allowance and then there’s an earnings disregard before the earnings taper applies. https://www.entitledto.co.uk/help/work-allowance-universal-credit

Tax Credits actually work slightly differently. HMRC calculate your entitlement for the year (or part-year, if circumstances change in the middle of the year), and then see how many "payment days" you have. They then divide the amount owed by the number of payment days, with the first payment being an odd amount due to rounding.

So it isn't strictly paid in arrears or in advance. Depending on when your payment days happen to fall in a particular year, you may end up being paid amounts for the past or the future.

How Housing Benefit deal with your income from tax credits is a different story. HB treat tax credits payments as relating to the week, or 4 weeks, ending on the due date for payment.
