I can never remember - is it stalagmites or stalagtites that hang down?
Seriously - I'm sure someone will be along soon with a proper idea.1 -
Stalactites cling tight to the ceiling... ☺️
We've just bought a cottage with beams and the beams have great big hooks in them, no idea what they were for.
These look like they have rounded ends?1 -

They are gas pipes from the old days when we had gas lighting before electric lights came into vogue.
The one in the bedroom is positioned near the window for modesty purposes so that any shadow from the occupants is cast into the room and not against the curtain, thus protecting the privacy of the individuals in the room and protecting any passers-by from seeing the form of the individuals in whatever state of dress may be in the bedroom.
If you decide to get these cut back be sure to get a professional to verify that the pipes are not still live to the mains gas supply. Once confirmed dead, the pipes can be cut back to above the ceiling, or further back if required.
Hope that helps.7 -
Thanks all. Yeah these definitely are for gas lighting.Just read from the report.
Furthermore, I note there was redundant gas lighting fittings to the ceilings at first and ground floor level. Thus, you may care to have any redundant gas lighting fittings removed.

It's pretty simple.
Stalactite begins with an S - so Starts from the ceiling
Whereas stalagmite begins with an S - so Starts from the floor.1
